Civilians Under Fire as Houthi Forces Intensify Siege and Attacks on Taiz
Taiz Governorate is facing an escalating humanitarian catastrophe as Houthi militias engage in systematic shelling of residential neighborhoods and critical civilian infrastructure. This surge in military aggression follows the Yemeni government’s announcement of the "Dawn of Yemen" offensive, prompting retaliatory attacks that have resulted in significant civilian casualties and the tightening of a blockade that continues to isolate millions of residents from the outside world.
Recent field reports from human rights organizations have documented a series of grave violations committed by the militia over the past three days. On October 6 alone, mortar and missile strikes in densely populated areas resulted in 14 deaths and 38 injuries. The violence has caused extensive damage to residential properties and essential service facilities across the city, as well as the districts of Sabir Al-Mawadim, Al-Ma'afir, Al-Silw, and Hayfan. Consequently, the region has recorded the highest rates of internal displacement in the country, with hundreds of families fleeing their homes in the southern and western countryside to seek refuge in the city center or primitive camps lacking basic necessities.
As the militia suffers setbacks on various fronts—including Al-Arba'een, Al-Aqroud, Hayfan, and Al-Anayn—it has increasingly targeted the civilian population to compensate for its tactical losses. In Hayfan and Al-Silw, Houthi elements have forcibly evicted residents at gunpoint, repurposing civilian homes into military barracks and sniper positions. These actions have effectively transformed non-combatants into human shields, further endangering those trapped within the conflict zones.
The aggression extended into October 7, when the militia utilized artillery and explosive-laden drones to strike villages in the Quds sub-district of Al-Ma'afir and the Al-Ahkoum front. These attacks forced the displacement of 18 families and caused partial destruction to several homes. Simultaneously, the militia has maintained a strict collective punishment policy by paralyzing movement at the Hanger crossing, the primary western artery for the city. By targeting the crossing with heavy machine guns and artillery, the militia has successfully obstructed the transit of civilians, humanitarian aid, and essential medical and food supplies.
The wave of repression continued on October 8, following further losses in the Al-Silw district. Houthi forces conducted widespread raids, detaining a local official alongside several activists and civilians, and forcibly transferring them to undisclosed locations. Reports also indicate the ongoing use of Katyusha rockets against the Al-Dhabab and Hayfan areas, where strikes have incinerated private property and civilian transport vehicles. By cutting off internal supply routes between Al-Turbah and the city center, the militia continues to methodically dismantle the remaining foundations of civilian life in Taiz.
